Chess Prodigy Keeps His Fame in Check After `Bobby Fischer'

NEW YORK "Searching for Bobby Fischer" is the summer's most offbeatfamily movie, a true-life story about what might happen if your6-year-old became a chess prodigy.

When it happened to Fred Waitzkin, a professional writer, andhis wife, Bonnie, he wrote a book, Searching for Bobby Fischer, in1988.

Waitzkin, a chess fan, had originally planned a book thatlooked at the game and its champions. Instead, the focus was changedto show, he said, "how I felt about my son's talent and my wife,relative to the insanity of Josh and me living the chess life."
